Shell Reamer Arbor Dimensions: Selected Large Sizes

A shell reamer arbor supports the hollow cutter and transmits drive through matching lugs and slots. Its size number identifies a group of compatible reamer diameters, not a universal shaft diameter. This selected reference covers larger arbor sizes 9 through 11 and complements the smaller cutter examples elsewhere in the reamer series.

Read the fit range and mounting dimensions

The table gives the reamer-size range, arbor overall length, approximate taper length, and Morse taper number for the taper-shank arbor. These are selected current catalog examples checked against the handbook figure. The fits are a screening aid; verify the actual arbor style and current supplier drawing before purchase or setup.

A Morse taper number describes the machine-side connection. The reamer-side taper is separate: the source identifies a taper of 1/8 inch per foot to fit the shell reamer’s mounting hole. Do not interpret that value as the Morse taper. The reamer’s driving slots must also engage the arbor lugs.

Check both ends before assembly

Start by matching the cutter’s nominal diameter to the arbor’s listed reamer range. Then confirm the arbor number, taper interface, shank style, Morse taper, overall length, and driving-lug geometry. A fitting range alone does not prove that two products have matching taper length, gauge location, slot position or lug width.

Clean and inspect both tapered surfaces. Chips, burrs, corrosion, fretting or a damaged lug can prevent full seating and cause runout or chatter. Do not force a component that stops short, and do not alter the taper or drive features to make unlike parts fit. Use the tooling and machine maker’s instructions for seating, retention and removal.

Straight-shank and taper-shank versions

A straight-shank arbor is held by a compatible chuck or holder; the shank diameter and available grip length must suit that holder. A taper-shank arbor is mounted in a matching socket, often identified by a Morse taper number. Select the arrangement for the machine spindle and verify the exact shank type on the product listing.

Overall length affects reach and rigidity. Longer projection can increase deflection, so use the shortest practical assembly that clears the work and fixture. Check the tool overhang, workholding, spindle runout, speed limits and manufacturer’s cutting data for the operation. The dimensions in this chart do not establish a safe speed, feed or allowable cutting load.

Keep standards and product availability in view

ASME B94.2 covers reamer nomenclature, types, sizes and tolerances and remains in effect on stabilized maintenance. The standard’s scope does not mean every nominal size is currently stocked by every supplier. A current catalog may list a limited range, change an item number, or discontinue a configuration.

Use the exact cutter and arbor part numbers when documenting a setup. If replacing an arbor, compare both the reamer-end fit and the machine-side mount; matching one number is not enough. For a precision operation, use the controlled standard and current product drawing rather than this short reference.

Before cutting, verify that the assembly is fully seated, the drive lugs are engaged, and the workpiece is rigidly held. Follow the machine’s operating and guarding instructions. A good fit check protects the cutter, arbor, spindle and finished hole from damage caused by a mismatched interface.

Source and scope

The selected size 9-11 dimensions were checked against the source figure and the current ICS page 197 catalog. ASME identifies B94.2-1995 (S2025) as the standard for reamer nomenclature, types, sizes and tolerances. The chart is not a complete arbor schedule or an interchangeability guarantee.
